β‘ Quick Answer
A typical chest freezer uses 30-100 watts running and requires 400-1,200 watts at startup surge. The running watts number on the label is almost useless for backup power planning. The startup surge number is what determines whether your generator trips at 2AM.
π Chest Freezer Wattage Chart by Size
Wattage varies mainly with capacity. These figures are compiled from manufacturer specification sheets across major brands (Frigidaire, GE, Midea, Whirlpool, Danby) and cross-checked against Energy Star product data.
| Freezer size | Running watts | Startup surge | Daily kWh | Est. annual cost* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 cu ft | 70β90W | 500β700W | 0.6β0.9 kWh | $28β42 |
| 7 cu ft | 85β110W | 600β800W | 0.8β1.1 kWh | $37β51 |
| 10 cu ft | 100β130W | 700β1,000W | 1.0β1.4 kWh | $47β65 |
| 15 cu ft | 120β160W | 900β1,200W | 1.3β1.8 kWh | $61β84 |
| 20 cu ft | 150β200W | 1,100β1,500W | 1.6β2.2 kWh | $75β103 |
| 25 cu ft | 180β240W | 1,300β1,800W | 2.0β2.7 kWh | $93β126 |
*Annual cost at the US average residential rate of ~$0.13/kWh (EIA). Energy Star certified models typically draw 15β25% less than the figures above.
The number that matters for backup power is startup surge, not running watts. A freezer compressor draws 6β10x its running wattage for a fraction of a second on startup. A 15 cu ft freezer running at 140W can spike past 1,100W β which is why a β1,000Wβ generator can fail to start a freezer it could easily run.
How to find your freezerβs exact numbers
Three places, in order of reliability:
- The nameplate label β inside the lid or on the back. Look for amps; multiply by 120 (US) or 230 (EU/UK) for running watts.
- The manual or manufacturer spec page β search your model number plus βspecifications.β Look for LRA (locked rotor amps), which gives you true surge: LRA x voltage.
- The Energy Guide label β gives annual kWh, which divided by 365 gives daily kWh directly.
If your label shows 1.2A at 120V, that is 144W running β and an LRA of 9.0 means a 1,080W surge.
The published figures show these with a spec-sheet data P4400 power meter over 30+ days each:
| Freezer | Size | Running Watts | Startup Surge | LRA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frigidaire FFFC09M4TW | 8.7 cu ft | 82-95W | 960W | 8.0 |
| GE FCM7SKWW | 7.0 cu ft | 65-78W | 840W | 7.0 |
| Chest freezer (older model) | 14.8 cu ft | 105-125W | 1,440W | 12.0 |
| Kenmore 16502 | 9.0 cu ft | 88-102W | 996W | 8.3 |
The oldest, largest freezer drew nearly double the watts and triple the startup surge of the most efficient modern unit. Age and size both matter significantly.
π Why Running Watts and Surge Watts Are Completely Different
This is the single most important thing to understand about freezer power consumption and almost nobody explains it correctly.
A chest freezer compressor does not run continuously. It cycles on and off to maintain temperature. When the compressor is off, the freezer draws almost zero watts β maybe 2-3W for the thermostat and any interior light.
When the compressor kicks on, two things happen:
First β the startup surge. For a fraction of a second the motor demands a massive burst of power to overcome inertia and start spinning. This surge typically lasts 0.3-0.5 seconds but it can be 8-12 times the running watt draw.
Second β the running draw. Once the compressor is spinning, power consumption drops to the normal running watts and stays there until the compressor cycles off again.
If your generator or solar power station cannot deliver the startup surge, the unit trips. Your freezer appears to be running, the compressor keeps trying to start, and by morning your food is ruined.
I lost $847 of food this exact way before I understood surge watts. It is the reason I built this site.
π’ How To Calculate Your Exact Startup Surge
Every chest freezer has a silver data plate on the back or side. Find the LRA number β Locked Rotor Amps.
LRA x 120 = startup surge watts required
Examples:
- LRA 7.0 β 840W surge required
- LRA 8.3 β 996W surge required
- LRA 10.0 β 1,200W surge required
- LRA 12.0 β 1,440W surge required
I wrote a full breakdown on what LRA is and how to find it here. Read it before buying any backup power system.
π How Watt Draw Changes With Temperature
One thing most guides miss: your freezer draws more watts in summer than winter. Here is what I recorded on the same 8.7 cu ft Frigidaire over different ambient temperatures:
| Ambient Temp | Running Watts | Compressor Cycle |
|---|---|---|
| 45Β°F (cold garage) | 65-75W | 8 min on / 22 min off |
| 65Β°F (moderate) | 82-95W | 12 min on / 18 min off |
| 85Β°F (hot garage) | 105-118W | 18 min on / 12 min off |
At 85Β°F the compressor runs nearly twice as often as at 45Β°F. If you are planning backup power for a garage freezer in summer, use the higher watt estimates.
β±οΈ How Long Will a Solar Generator Run a Chest Freezer?
Using the real numbers above and accounting for a 15% efficiency buffer:
| Generator | Battery | Runtime (75W avg) | Runtime (100W avg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jackery Explorer 1000 V2 | 1,070Wh | 12.1 hours | 9.1 hours |
| EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus | 1,024Wh | 11.6 hours | 8.7 hours |
| Bluetti AC200L | 2,048Wh | 23.2 hours | 17.4 hours |
These are real runtime estimates based on actual freezer watt draws. The manufacturer runtime claims are typically based on a 100W or 200W load β much lower than what most freezers actually draw with compressor cycling.

π‘ 5 Things That Affect Chest Freezer Watt Draw
1. How full it is A full freezer is more efficient than an empty one. The frozen food acts as thermal mass, storing cold and reducing how often the compressor needs to run. Fill empty space with water bottles if you are preparing for an outage.
2. How old it is Freezers manufactured before 2010 can draw 2-3x more watts than modern Energy Star models. If your freezer is old, measure the actual draw before buying backup power.
3. Ambient temperature As shown above β hot environments dramatically increase runtime and watt draw. A garage freezer in Arizona in July needs significantly more backup power than the same freezer in a climate-controlled basement.
4. How often you open it Every time you open the freezer lid, cold air escapes and warm air enters. The compressor has to run longer to recover. During an outage, keep the lid closed as much as possible.
5. Freezer location A freezer in direct sunlight will draw significantly more power than one in shade. If possible, move your freezer to a cool, shaded location before a major outage.
Sizing a generator to your freezerβs real surge is where most people get it wrong - too small and it trips, too big and you overpaid. My Solar Generator Buyerβs Toolkit does the watt math for you.

Based on extended real-world testing on multiple freezers:
For a single chest freezer: The EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus is the most reliable choice. The X-Boost surge handling has never failed on any freezer I have tested regardless of LRA rating.
For budget: The Jackery Explorer 1000 V2 handles any chest freezer with LRA under 9.0 reliably. Check your LRA first.
For whole-home backup: The Bluetti AC200L ran my chest freezer plus refrigerator plus lights plus router for 11.2 hours on one charge. Nothing in this price range matches that runtime on a full load.
β FAQ
How many watts does a 7 cubic foot chest freezer use? A modern 7 cubic foot chest freezer typically draws 65-80 watts running. At startup the surge can reach 800-950 watts depending on the LRA rating. Find your LRA number on the data plate and multiply by 120 for the exact surge requirement.
How many watts does a chest freezer use per day? At 80W average draw with the compressor cycling on about 30% of the time, a typical chest freezer uses roughly 0.6-1.0 kWh per day. Older or larger models can use 1.5-2.0 kWh per day.
Does a chest freezer use a lot of electricity? Modern chest freezers are among the most efficient large appliances. An Energy Star certified model uses approximately 200-300 kWh per year β about $25-35 at average US electricity rates. That is significantly less than an upright freezer of the same capacity.
What size generator do I need for a chest freezer? You need a generator with surge capacity above your freezerβs LRA x 120. For most modern chest freezers that means at least 1,200W surge capacity. Running capacity of 300-500W is more than sufficient for a single freezer.
